If you are like me you drink a lot of water, I happen to live in a dry climate which is one of the reasons I drink as much water as I do. The second reason is quite frankly I like the taste of it and as much as I enjoy wine I can't drink it all day long. A funny thing has happened in my life, water the most basic of human necessities has become so bloody complicated. Over the past 10 years it has been fine to drink tap water, then it wasn't ok and bottled water was best, then you were told that only water from the Fiji springs were good enough. Quite frankly I think the whole thing is ridiculous.
I for one like the taste of tap water and that is my water of choice, I usually carry a small reusable plastic bottle so I can refill wherever possible. Unless I am on a long road trip and don't bring enough water I never have any need to buy bottled. Over the last year I have also been told that the plastic bottle that I use will eventually breakdown and will cause me to induce carcinogens into my body. So now the new thing on the market are metal containers that don't release these nasty carcinogens.
What next? Are they going to tell us that the metal used on these new canteens is going to hurt us, maybe like most things surrounding food and drink we should be listening to our elders. They used glass bottles for everything and you know what water, pop, wine and just about any damn drink tastes better in a glass bottle. I don't drink a huge amount of pop but when I visit Mexico you can get pop in glass bottles and I have to say the taste difference from a can and especially a plastic container is huge!
Moving forward I think I am going to avoid the whole metal trend and go directly to glass and stay there. It's heavier and we know the main reason they don't ship it any more in North America is the cost. I wonder though with the cost and pollution created from making and recycling plastic if going back to bottles won't be cheaper in the long run? We know it tastes better and let's be honest having milk out of a glass jug is just cool.
As are most things in life the decisions we often find ourselves making is through social suggestion or pressure which in many cases is a smart business guy who has convinced us all to throw out what we have for the new thing. I am sticking with tap water because it tastes just fine and quite frankly I pay enough for it through my taxes. I will be using a glass bottle and carry this around with me for everyday drinking. It will clean itself very well in the dishwasher and costs nothing. The great news for me is unlike the new trendy thing to drink water out of, my glass bottle is never going to get negative press. Well let's not say never, I will however not listen to it!
